Architectural Depth Made Effortless
1. Preparing Your Space and Material
Before you begin the physical installation, it is vital to ensure both your environment and your materials are ready for the project. Because wood is a natural material, it reacts to the humidity and temperature of its surroundings.

Acclimation: Place your panels in the room where they will be installed for at least 24–48 hours. This allows the MDF or Polystyrene to stabilize, preventing any unwanted expansion or gaps after they are attached to the wall.

Substrate Check: Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and free of protruding nails or peeling paint. For our Acoustic Slat panels, we highly recommend painting the wall a dark color or black before you start; this ensures that the wall behind the felt is invisible, creating a more professional "infinite depth" look.
Once your space is prepped and your panels have acclimated, gather the following tools to ensure a smooth workflow: a miter saw with a fine-tooth blade for clean cuts, a high-tack construction adhesive (like an MS Polymer), and for acoustic panels, black drywall screws which will disappear into the felt backing.
2. Strategic Planning and Cutting
A great installation starts with a clear plan. Measure your wall height at multiple points, as floors and ceilings are rarely perfectly level. Once you have your measurements, you can begin tailoring the panels to fit your specific dimensions.

Precision Cutting: When using a miter saw or circular saw, always cut with the decorative side facing up. This prevents the wood veneer or PS finish from splintering as the blade exits the material.

Width Adjustments: For Acoustic Slat panels, you don't need a saw to adjust the width. Simply use a sharp utility knife to slice through the felt backing between the slats. For PS panels, use your saw to ensure a straight vertical edge.
By taking the time to "dry-fit" your panels against the wall before applying adhesive, you can verify that your cuts are exact and that your pattern remains consistent across the entire feature wall.
3. Installation Techniques
The method of attachment depends on which Dunya product you have selected. Our panels are engineered for different environments, and using the correct securing method ensures they stay beautiful even in high-traffic areas.
Option A: Acoustic Slat Panels (MDF on Felt)
These panels provide both aesthetic warmth and sound-dampening qualities. Because they are heavier than our PS options, they benefit from a mechanical bond.

Adhesive + Screws: Apply a "Z" pattern of construction adhesive to the back of the felt. Once the panel is pressed to the wall, drive black screws through the felt (between the wood slats) into the drywall or studs.

Seamless Joining: Position the panels so the felt edge of the new panel butts tightly against the wood slat of the previous one. This hides the seam entirely, creating a continuous architectural texture.
Option B: Polystyrene (PS) Fluted Panels
Our PS panels are moisture-resistant and incredibly lightweight, making them perfect for bathrooms or quick feature wall updates.

Interlocking Tongue-and-Groove: Most PS panels feature an overlapping edge. Start from the left side of your wall and work to the right, sliding the "groove" of the new panel over the "tongue" of the installed one.

Adhesive Only: Due to their light weight, these panels usually only require a high-quality adhesive. Press and hold each panel for 30 seconds to ensure a permanent bond.
4. Finishing and Professional Touches
The difference between a DIY project and a professional #DesignByDunya installation lies in the details. Handling corners and outlets with care will give your project a custom-built appearance.

Electrical Outlets: Measure carefully and use a jigsaw to create cutouts for outlet boxes. Ensure your cut is slightly smaller than the outlet faceplate so the plate covers the raw edges of the panel.

Exposed Edges: If your paneling doesn't run wall-to-wall, use a Dunya matching L-trim or an end-cap to hide the side profile of the panel. This creates a clean, framed look for your feature.
Once the panels are secured, you can reinstall your baseboards directly over the bottom of the panels for a "built-in" look, or sit the panels flush on top of existing trim for a faster update.
5. Long-term Care and Design Tips
One of the best features of Dunya panels is their low-maintenance nature. They do not require the sanding, staining, or sealing associated with traditional woodworking.

Maintenance: To keep your panels looking new, simply use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove dust from the grooves. For PS panels, a damp cloth is sufficient for cleaning.

Lighting Strategy: To truly make your fluted walls "pop," consider installing LED strip lighting or "grazing" lights at the ceiling line. The 3D texture of the panels creates beautiful shadows and highlights that change throughout the day.
